Oozes are basically deposits of soft mud on the ocean floor. They form on areas of the seafloor distant enough from land so that the slow but steady deposition of dead microorganisms from overlying waters is not obscured by sediments washed from the land.

1. Marine ooze is a phenomenon where clay or silt of soft nature gets deposited on the floor of the ocean.

2. The ocean floor where the deposition takes place is generally located at a distance from the land.

3. The deposition consists of fragmentary residues of microorganisms. They are stored from the mantling water and this process is quite consistent.

4. Marine oozes are broadly classified into-

a. calcareous oozes

b. siliceous oozes
