Nucleus (Control centre of cell) is a spherical or oval darkly stained structure. It lies usually in the centre of the animal cells, but is displaced to one side in plant cells due to the development of vacuole. It was discovered by Robert Brown. Generally, there is one nucleus per cell, but binucleate and multinucleate cells are also present, e.g., striated muscle fibres. Cells without nucleus are also found, e.g., mammalian RBCs, and sieve tube cells of phloem.
