parts of flowers

(1) calyx: outer whorls of flowers and members are called sepals. generally sepals are green leaf like and protect the flower in bud stage. the calyx may be gamosepalous ( sepals united) or polysepalous ( sepals free)

(2) corolla ( petals): second whorls of flowers and the members are called petals. coralla is generally bright coloured, have fragrance to make flower attractive for insect pollination, shape and structure of coralla varies in different flowers example: tubular , bell shaped, funnel shaped , wheel shaped etc. like calyx, coralla may be free ( polysepalous) or unitd ( gamopetalous).

(3) Androecium: third whorls of flowers and is inner to coralla. it is male reproductive system composed of stamens. A stamen consists of anther connective and fillament. Anthers are biloped. Each lobe contain two microsporangia or pollen sacs. pollen are produce by pollen sacs. A sterile stamen is called staminode.

they may be variation in the length of filament within flowers as in salvia and mustard.

(4) Gynoecium: fourth and last whorl. it is female reproductive part composed of one or more carpels. carpels may be free called apocarpous , example- lotus, rose or carpels may be fused called syncarpous, example- mustard and tomato

A carpel has three parts:

(a) Overy: Basal swollen part of carpels bears ovules. these ovules after fertilization from seeds. ovules are attached to flattened cushion like structure called placenta. the ovary has one or more chamber called loculi example: unilocular (one chamber) , bilocular ( two chamber), trilocular (three chamber) etc. the ovary wall form pericarp ( fruit wall)

(b) style : tube like structure connects stigma to ovary and lies above in a carpels.

(c) stigma: generally, situated at the top of style and acts as receptive organ for grains during pollination

answer:

Most flowers have four main parts: sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels. The stamens are the male part whereas the carpels are the female part of the flower. Most flowers are hermaphrodite where they contain both male and female parts. Others may contain one of the two parts and may be male or female
