northern plains is formed by the interplay of three major river systems,namely-the indus,the ganga andthe brahmaputra along with their tributaries.this plain is formed of alluvial soil.the plain being about 2400 km log and 240 to 320 km broad.it is a densely populated physiographic division.

1. Northern plains are a physical feature of the country which lies in the north of Deccan plateau and south to the Himalayas.

2. The silt or alluvium which was left by the rivers of the Himalayas led to the formation of these Plains.

3. The Northern plains are drained by rivers like Yamuna and Ghaghara and others.

4. It experiences a continental type of climate with extreme cold and extreme heat.

5. Tropical thorn forest mainly characterizes the northern plain with vegetation like Sal and Timber trees.
