NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students

Pigments of photosynthesis:

 A chromatographic separation of leaf pigment shows that colour in leaves consists of four pigments- chlorophyll a (blue green in chromatogram), chlorophyll b (yellow green), xanthophylls (yellow) and carotenoids (yellow orange).

 These pigments absorb light at specific wavelengths.

 Maximum absorption of light occurs in blue and red regions of spectrum by chlorophyll a.

 Rate of photosynthesis is also higher in blue and red regions.

Conclusion: Chlorophyll a is the chief pigment associated with photosynthesis.

Note: Chlorophyll a is the most abundant plant pigment in the world.
