Short note pigments involved in photosynthesis
Answers
NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students
Pigments of photosynthesis:
A chromatographic separation of leaf pigment shows that colour in leaves consists of four pigments- chlorophyll a (blue green in chromatogram), chlorophyll b (yellow green), xanthophylls (yellow) and carotenoids (yellow orange).
These pigments absorb light at specific wavelengths.
Maximum absorption of light occurs in blue and red regions of spectrum by chlorophyll a.
Rate of photosynthesis is also higher in blue and red regions.
Conclusion: Chlorophyll a is the chief pigment associated with photosynthesis.
Note: Chlorophyll a is the most abundant plant pigment in the world.
