It simply means purifying the metal according to reactivity series.CARBON is used to reduce oxides of metals below it in the reactivity series. E.g,oxides of zinc, lead, and iron can be reduced by carbon. The carbon is usually used in the form of coke. This is coal from which some impurities have been removed.
PbO(s) + C(s) → Pb(s) + CO(g)
Lead(II)Oxide + Carbon(Coke) →(heat applied) Lead + Carbon Monoxide.
Although carbon monoxide is a good reducing agent,it is toxic when produced directly into air. It may cause acid ,you react CO in excess air to neutralize it.
2CO + O2 → 2CO2
Carbon Monoxide + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide
