The National Health Policy, 1983 stated that replacement levels of total fertility rate (TFR) should be achieved by the year 2000. On 11 May, 2000 India is projected to have 1 billion 3 (100 crore) people, i.e. 16 percent of the World's population on 2.4 percent of the globe's land area.
