Short-notes on Pangea:

  • Theory of Plate Tectonics states that: Earth’s Crust (Upper part of Earth) is formed by 7 major plates. These plates move in all directions. As a result, land folds (formation of Fold Mountains), Earthquakes or Volcanic Eruptions take place.
  • Movement of Tectonic Plates have changed the position & size of continents over millions of years.
  • Many million years ago, All Landmass on Earth existed as One Super Continent – called Pangea.

  1. Northern part of Pangea was called 'Angara' or 'Laurasia' which consisted of North America and Eurasia (Europe and Asia).
  2. Southern part of Pangea was called 'Gondwana' which consisted of South America, Africa, Australia, Antarctica and India.
  3. Pangea also consisted of a Narrow, Elongated Oceanic trough lying between the Eurasian plate & Gondwana land called 'Tethys'
