Sati system was a religious practice among Hindus in which, the widow was expected to immolate (burn herself alive) on her husband's pyre. The widow who performs this act was called 'Sati' which means 'True'. With the efforts of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, this practice was banned by law in 1829 by the British.
