There was a time when in India women was considered as the door to hell. Women was suppressed in every aspect of human life. Even in the regime of East India Company this type of stereotyping continues but Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was against all types of rotten customs related to women. He work hard to start the culture of widow remarriage in the country.

In the medieval period, " Women " were the one who actually suffered the most. They were denied of education, jobs, and all the basic facilities that a member of the family enjoys. In the year 1856, " Hindi widow remarriage Act " was passed. Under this, a widow can remarry, if she wish to. This was the mot successful action taken by the Lord Dalhousie. " Sati pratha " was the main reason for this. It was abolished by William Bentinck.
But ' widow remarriage movement ' was not easy as we see today. All the Hindu upper caste families denied the widow remarriages. In this, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar played a vital role. He convinced many people. Under this act, a widow can do whatever she seems best for herself. She can take her own decisions, no one can force her. She can remarry.
