utkal divas is celebrated on 1 April in Odisha in the memory of the formation of the state as a separate province on 1 April 1936. After losing its political identity completely in 1568 following the defeat and demise of the last king Mukunda Dev, efforts resulted in the formation of a politically separate state under British rule on a linguistic basis on 1 April 1936.

Utkal Divas which was basically the magnificent festival celebrated in Odisha day on 1st April across Odisha in the recollection of the organization of the state as a separate territory on 1 April 1936.

After the death of the latter Odia king, Mukund Dev in 1568, region had been controlled by Mughals, British, Marathas, and Nawabs. However, there was no proximity of Odisha state name in the political map of India.

There were Odia fictions, prose, verse, plays, literature, huge media articulating population and everything that's needed in a place which can be represented as a State. Utkal Gourav Madhusudan Das ascertained an Odia social and cultural institution designated as Utkal Sammilani in 1903 to unite all Odia. A revolution was inaugurated by them which continued for three decades under the management of Utkala Gouraba Madhusudan Das, Utkala Mani Gopabandhu Das, and many others with the assistance of the public.
