As a cheap way of generating high voltage at high frequency without complicated circuitry.

A spark generates a lot of high frequency. A Tesla coil was used in some spark gap transmitters to generate radio frequency. A filter was used to select the frequency wanted from the rich mixture produced by the spark.

Spark-gap transmitter - Wikipedia

Spark gap transmitters are not legal now because of the wide-band interference that they produce even with filtering. This disadvantage can be used as an advantage in radio frequency jamming by simply eliminating the filtering.

In modern usage, I’ve only seen Tesla coils used in welding machines. DC current does not like to jump a gap to start an arc and some types of welding, like aluminum welding, doesn’t work well being directly contacted with a DC electrode, as I understand it. Arcs are easy to maintain once started however. (Don’t question me about welding please because I’m not a welder but I have repaired the machines.) For aluminum welding, some machines will use a Tesla coil as a cheap way to generate high frequency in order to form an arc without touching the electrode to the metal. The arc then is conducting electricity energizing a relay to break the contact with the Tesla coil leaving only the DC component. The arc is still present—only pure DC now—so the relay continues to disable the Tesla coil. Once the arc is quenched, the relay drops out and the Tesla coil is again given power to re-establish the arc. Although other methods could be used, a Tesla coil is rugged, simple and extremely reliable. Using the drop-out relay makes the switching automatic.
