Answer:

The proverb "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" suggests that the cleanest person is the one closest to God. In this context, cleanliness refers to a clean and neat physical state; however, some may argue that it also refers to a clean mental state. The phrase clearly refers to one thing: "one can only get spiritually connected with God if one seeks it in a neat and clean state of physical as well as mental being."

Explanation:

Once upon a time, a prestigious temple in town was looking for the main priest, who would perform all religious duties in the temple and serve as the temple's second in command after the head priest.

Many priests from faraway places vied for the prestigious position. They all arrived impeccably dressed in traditional attire and looking as neat and clean as they had never looked before. There was this one priest named Ram who was extremely learned and knew every religious scripture in detail, but from the way he dressed and looked, he appeared clumsy and careless. Despite his knowledge, the head priest chose another contestant as his assistant.

Ram was perplexed and asked the head priest why he hadn't been chosen, despite being the wisest of them all. The priest just said these words that completely silenced Ram, much to Ram's embarrassment. "A clean mind cannot reside in an unclean body," the priest said; "cleanliness is next to godliness."
