Sahil, a student of class four reported to his teacher that his lunch box was missing. The whole class tried to find his lunch, but in vain. It was the first instance of theft of food in the class and in the days that followed, there were few more thefts and everyone wondered who it could be.
Rahul, a boy of ten who lived in the slums of Kamlapur in eastern Delhi. His father worked in a textile factory as a peon and whatever meager amount he earned, Rhul's mother managed the household well enough to have two decent meals a day. Rahul went to a government school in neighborhood and he was among the brighest students in his class.
While returning from his factory one day, Rahul's father met with an accident as a speeding car ran over his legs and he ended up in bed crippled after a period of trial and tribulations in a government hospital. His mother was not educated and there was no source of income. Rahul often reminisced good old days when his father would come back in the evening and they would have dinner, though simple, satisfying and complete. The want of good food slowly crippled his spirit. It was a pain to see his father lying in bed, mother crying for this unprecedented misfortune and empty casserole. His tiffin at school also didn't taste good like in the past. He felt all the time as if he was starving.
The teacher sat discussing where could all the lunch boxes go. In the last bench Rahul sat imagining all the bread, paranthas, pickle he had eaten in the last two weeks. He was horrified to think what would happen if anyone would come to know. Did that mean he needed to stop the stealing business? He kept proding himself not to, but he couldn't undo the past..
