Explanation:
Example is better than precept.
This famous proverb advises us that it is better that one who tenders advice to others on any issue must put an example before others by following them than to just tendering those who seek advice.
This is an old proverb but is true forever. It advises those who think that the advice they give on any issue that comes up in their course of action. Before one tenders advice to others one should introspect oneself whether one follows them. If the preceptor does not follow the advice he imparts, then those advice will not impress others and also none will be impressed by him. When one is with the habit of smoking and ask the children not to smoke, it won’t have any impression on them. They may not smoke at that time out of fear but will surely make an experiment when a chance occurs.
If father asks the boy or the girl to rise early and go for a walk but he himself rises very late, his advice will not impress the children. To make the precept work, the preceptor must prove it from his own life.
Answer:
Mr. John was a high school teacher who used to teach in the St. Joseph senior secondary school, Dalhousie. There, each and every teacher taught the children to be disciplined, kind and to show love towards the poor and to help them and so Mr. John was also not an exception.
He was a person of extreme solemnity, and was an extremely punctual man. He often used to reach before time for his classes and everybody in the class imagined him as a strict teacher.
But from the past few weeks he was noticing a young boy named Peter who used to be very sorrowful in the class. He always remained quiet and never talked to any other child in the class. Seeing such a dejected behaviour of that boy from a long course of time forced Mr. John to ask him as to what was eating him from inside.
Later on Mr. John got to know that Peter's parents had recently died in a car accident and that he was living with his own uncle and aunt in their home. "But...... sir, I am treated as a servant there" said Peter with a painful voice. Mr. John seemed to understand the real grief of Peter and felt bad for him.
The following day, Mr. John talked with Peter's aunt for about 3 hours. Peter stood outside the room, trying to hear as much as he could "Please try to understand he will feel safer with me. He has suffered a lot and I will try my best that it should not get worse" said Mr. John to Peter's uncle. Peter was able to hear a few more whispers and then their meeting got over.
Mr. John glanced at Peter with eyes full of tears. Peter had also become quiet aware that his house was about to change. Mr. John lifted his bag and patted over his shoulder. Peter also started feeling more secure in his house and never longed for his parents. He got whatever he needed at that crucial time of his life and was rightly guided by the teachings of Mr. John. Moreover Peter was also forbidden by Mr. John to tell the truth to anybody in the class.
Days passed, Years passed. Peter was now a successful doctor in the town and grew up to be a responsible, gentle, kind hearted and a disciplined man, under the teachings of that Mr. John who once taught in St. Joseph, how to love others. It is indeed a true saying that "example is better than the precept"
