When I was a little girl both my mother and my grandmother would say this proverb when I wished for something I couldn't have and my vision of the "jolly beggars" has been with me ever since.
It wasn't until I was much older that I realized my childish interpretation of this saying was probably not in line with the lesson it is intended to teach!
Still I feel my vision is sound, my beggars are joyful and not burdened by material possessions but need only freedom and each other. Is anything worth more?
