Kalpana Chawla was an American astronaut of Indian origin. She had a fascination for airplanes right from her childhood. Kalpana did her Bachelors and Masters degree in Aeronautical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering respectively.

She began her career with NASA to assist them in the research on computational fluid dynamics. Her first flight was in 1996, while she made her debut into space mission a year later in November. She was an integral part of the STS-107 mission that was responsible for the takeoff of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Unfortunately, there was a technical snag and the space craft broke apart due to instability. This resulted in Kalpana Chawla’s instant death at the young age of 40 along with the other six members in the spacecraft.
