Summary of the Poem
The poem begins by showing the poetess sitting on a bench under an old willow tree. She has just sat there to read something. In the beginning, she is in a state of hopelessness and helplessness. As she thinks that she has faced enough miseries to be sad, she is convinced that life has now become unbearable for her.
Moments later, a boy comes closer to her, stands with his head lowered. She is disturbed by the presence of the boy. She did not like the boy to talk to her as she was not in the mood. The boy comes to her. He shows the poetess a rough flower which is not beautiful. The boy thinks that she will be surprised and will praise the flower. But she just smiles heartlessly and wants the boy to go away.
The boy, instead of going away, sits next to her and starts smelling the flower amusingly. He says to her that I have just picked it because it is beautiful and it is for you. The poetess again replies to the little boy with carelessness and tries to take the flower despite knowing it discolored and ugly. But she is passing fake remarks to get rid of the boy. Until now, she is absolutely indifferent to the feelings of the young boy. Suddenly, when he tries to give her the flower, he fails to put it in her hands.
Then she realizes that the boy was blind. The poetess chokes with surprise and her voice trembles. She is overwhelmed with guilt as she was behaving with the boy. The boy, giving her the flower and not knowing how she reacts and feels, runs away. When he goes, the poetess becomes sad. She condemns her own attitude towards the boy who wanted to please her with flower. He found her, offered her the flower. The poetess could feel how beautiful was he from his inner. Although he could not see her.
In the end, the poetess is convinced that the problem was not with the outer world but with her own self. Then she promises to herself that from now onwards she will only look for the beauty of life. The poem ends emotionally as she sees the young boy doing the same act with another person.
