Introduction to the poem

‘A legend of the Northland’ is a ballad.  A ballad is a poem narrating a story in short stanzas. Ballad is such kind of poem which tells a story in short stanzas and in the poem all the stanzas comprise four lines. In total, there are 16 stanzas in this poem and these stanzas will tell us a story.  Ballads are a part of folk culture or popular culture and are passed on orally from one generation to the next. (Folk culture is a story of any area and is known as ballad). Folk culture comprises of traditional stories which are passed on from one generation to next generation.

This story is of the Northland area, the area which is near the North Pole. This exact place is not specified but ‘Northland’ means the area in the northernmost part of the earth i.e., near the North Pole. ‘Legend’ means a historical story, one which is very old and has been passed on from generation to generation.

My childhood:

My childhood summary deals with the famous biography “Wings of Fire” of the celebrated Indian APJ Abdul Kalam. My Childhood refers to a section in this book. This section or chapter talks about the early days’ of Kalam. Furthermore, the chapter gives us an idea of how the childhood of Abdul Kalam prepared him to become a successful scientist and president in the future. Much has to do with his upbringing which Kalam discusses in this section from “Wings of Fire”. Moreover, Kalam tells us about his parents and siblings here. He also mentions the important role of his friends in his life. In short, one can say, that in My Childhood, Kalam mentions everything that had an impact on his life. These things shaped him into the successful man he became in the future.

Iswaran the storyteller:

The Lake Isle of Innisfree Summary – In this the poet talks about various things. Firstly, he wants to go to Innisfree to build a cabin. Further, he describes the cabin as small and a simple one sort of rustic as per the poets’ description. The poet also decides how he will have a bean garden in his vicinity and that he will also have a beehive. While describing it his expression says how he wants his little cottage in the forest surrounded by the honeybees. Along with that, he expresses his want of living alone. He wants it because he wants to live his life in peace and purity. In addition, he wants to live the country life to get away from the fast life rather live a slower but peaceful life. In the poem, he talks about various things in detail such as the hidden nooks and singing crickets. Overall the poem shows a lively flow of his imagination. Though, in the end, the poet reveals this image of fantasy is indeed dreamlike. Because he stands at a place which is totally the opposite of what he truly dreams of.
