Explanation:

The poem “River”, written by a Japanese poet Mr. Shuntarotanikawa, is more a conversation based between a mother and daughter. It brings out the motherly views of a mother to the questions asked by the child.

The poet very clearly shows how a mother has a definite and interesting answer to her children.

The child asks how old the river is, and mother spontaneously answers 'as ever as young as springtime' meaning to a mother, her children are always young even if they grow up in age.

The entire conversational poem format is very soothing and the mother’s own imagination in her answers thereby making mother herself an imagery.

An imagination runs across the poem but on a serious note, the poem shows how the child thinks and waits to get her doubts cleared by her mother’s clever answers.
