Short Summary of To a Butterfly by William Wordsworth
"To a Butterfly" by "William Wordsworth" is a lyric poem. This is Wordsworth’s best known poem addressing a butterfly. In the poem, he remembers how he and his sister Dorothy chased butterflies as children while living in Cockermouth before their mother’s death. The poem shows us the world from the perspective of a child and how that world changes slowly. Childhood begins with an innocence and a curiosity present inside us. The first part of the poem shows a compassionate side of love and a moment of wonder and beauty woven together. The childhood is like the butterfly that flies away very soon. The hunter emerges (the change) in the second half of the poem. It appears with its killer instinct to capture its prey. Wordsworth shows how this hunter like change kills the beauty of one’s childhood days and controls. It allows obstacles in our path to stop us from reaching our goals and takes away what we may cherish the most. The character Emmeline is shown to have a soul full of love and compassion. The change in one’s life is shown beautifully in the form of a butterfly which is the perfect example of metamorphosis - change from one state to another.
