Karnad's Yayati is an Indian mythological king who shows the modern alienated man.

Karnad has lended the myth from great Indian epic Mahabharta and Puranas.

Play starts when Yayati is married to Devayani who is the daughter of demons' guru Shukracharya.

Sharmistha who was daughter of Demon King Vrishparva is shown as her slave.

Yayati was carried away to find the miserable plight of Sharmistha a princess who secretly married her in spite of warning of his Father-in-Law that he should never let Sharmishtha share his bed.

Shukracharya later came to know this when he throw his curse on Yayati to become an old man.

Shukracharya also said that concession he could give was that if Yayati wish he will give his old age to someone and take youth from them.

Girish Karnad (born 1938) wrote his version of Yayati, when he was just twenty two years old.

It is the story of the first King of Pauravas - King Yayati, who while still young, is cursed to old age because of his sexual misconduct. His son Puru, who was supposed to lend his youth to Yayati, is cast in Karnad’s version of Yayati as an angry and ambitious man, trying to come to terms with the situation he has been dragged into.

Girish Karnad is a Marathi playwright, actor and film director who has been conferred the Jnanpith Award.
