"Maggie cuts her hair by George Eliot"

Maggie Tulliver is a nine-year-old girl who adores her younger brother, Tom. She is the novel's main character. The story is told by an unidentified narrator. Mr. and Mrs. Tulliver are concerned for Tom's schooling. Mr. Tulliver wants Tom to be a well-educated man. Tom decides to attend Mr. Stelling's school after contacting one of his friends, Mr. Riley. Maggie adores her younger brother more than she does herself. When Tom accuses her of being responsible for the death of his rabbits, she becomes uneasy. Maggie was responsible for looking after the rabbits while he was away at school. They weren't properly nourished or cared for.

She feels bad about her naivety, and Tom eventually forgets his grudges, making Maggie happy. Mrs Tulliver's sisters have paid the Tullivers a visit. Mrs Glegg's behaviour irritates Maggie and Tom. In the family, she criticises them. Tom and Maggie's cousin is Lucy Deane. These kids like playing together. Maggie's black and long hair is chastised by Mrs Glegg. Maggie has been agitated. She climbs into the attic and uses scissors to cut her hair.

She soon understands, however, that she has done something wrong because all of the family's elders are laughing at her.
