Summary of 'THE LITTLE GIRL'

            written by - Katherine Mansfield

The story is on a little girl. Her name is Kazia. She is very afraid of her father because of his hands and overbearing attitude.

Her grandmother used to encourage her to have a talk with her parents and know them better in free time especially on Sundays.

Her grandmother suggested Kazia make a pin-cushion as a gift for her father on his birthday.

She made the pin-cushion, filling it by tearing up into small pieces some papers she found on her mother's bedroom table.

That night was an uproar in the house because her father could not find the papers on which he had written his speech to be given to the Port Authority next day. Kezia had unknowingly torn it up and stuffed the pieces into the pin-cushion.

When her father comes to know this, he punished Kazia by hitting her on her palms with a ruler.

Kazia was jealous of the Macdonald family living next door because the father played with her children in his free time. She realized then that there were different kinds of fathers.

One day when Kazia's mother fell ill and was hospitalized, the grandmother had to accompany her. This left Kazia only with her father in the house at night.

Kazia had a nightmare while asleep. She woke up on fright and found her father by her bedside.

Her father took Kazia to his own bed to comfort her and he slept off, as he was tired.

Kazia suddenly realized that her father was lovable and had a big heart.

Moreover, the main theme of the story is the relationship between parents and their children. Also, the writer Katherine Mansfield wishes to tell us that children share a very deep bond of love with their parents. Even though young children do not feel that their parents love and care for them because they are strict, and to them, many of their parents’ action appears unfair. Besides, when children grow up they realize that all the acts of their parents were favourable for them. In addition, all along the parents were afraid for them and below their strictness lies a heart full of love for them. Most importantly, this bond of love between parents and their children has been underlined through the little girl summary.
