A transaction should first be recorded in journal book. After that you can record it in Ledger.

Recording a transaction in journal first and ledger next makes journal easier and in serially manner.

Commonly, A transaction is recorded in journal and then in ledger. But you can draw ledger directlly without making journal entry (if needed).
