Answer:

Personal Vehicle is much cheaper Uber/Ola (India)

  • My conclusion is based on the observations below

  • A standard Maruti lasts you 10 years with zero scrap value. (Mine is on 6th year at 50K)
  • Most people drive, so no driver expense (of atleast 10K/month+ 10% escalation YoY)
  • Car insurance is only 5K/year all inclusive (Bajan Allianz)
  • Tires need to be changed only once 5 years (normal usage of 25 Kms/day). They cost only 8000/set of 4
  • Battery needs to be changed only once every 3 years (Amaraja), Cost 9K
  • I assumed a loss of an interest of 10% on the 6,00,000 every year (compounded annually).
  • I assumed repairs ok 3K/year (less because of insurance), and Oil change etc (5K/year)
  • —Comes down to 18 Lakhs of expense for 10 years (No discounting just to keep it simple)

Uber

  1. Travel 25 Kms per day for 365 days, around 15Rs/Km (inclusive of surge/non-surge pricing).
  2. ---Comes to 21.5 Lakhs/ 10 years without discounting
  3. In case you get a driver for your personal vehicle and assume an increase of his salary by 10% YoY, then the cost of personal vehicle is significantly higher (around 36 Lakhs)
  4. —- Things that cannot be quantified but highly relevant
  5. Dealing with unpleasant asshole of Ola/Uber drivers
  6. Dealing with calling cabs for short distances
  7. Dealing with security issues by calling cabs at late nights, especially for women/Old people
  8. Dealing with dependence , especially during surge timings when cars are not available
  9. Dealing with arbitrary cancellations
