Explanation:

Actually this term- First war of Independence, was coined by V D Savarkar. And if we go through facts of this historical turn of events, it was indeed the first war. It was like awakening among mass of India that they are being dominated, exploited by an alien force.

Well question is why it is called so, fairly, because:

Military rebellion as a lot of practices involved in military expeditions were bound to disrespect religion of both Hindu - Muslim Community. Introduction of Enfield rifles sparked this. Military expeditions were across the seas and it was unsacred for the Brahman to cross the sea. Also, the Oudh rebellion and the Afghan War shattered the British Invincibility.

Trade of India was totally Monopolized and the Indian craftsmanship was suppressed with decrease in exports.

Stale Food crops were replaced with Cas crops like opium, cotton, jute and indigo. Peasants were forced to grow this crops despite a streak of famine or drought years. Also, sometimes during drought years, farmers were asked to pay for revenue much greater than original amount.

Also zamindari system exploited too much of the peasants. And even some of disloyal zamindars had their lands confisticated with uneven means and they were left without any source of income and ashamed to beg.

Several British officials tried to convert a lot of Indian people to Christianity, which was not just the task they were entitled to. Also, several priests were furious over there social and religious reforms like widow remarriage that Britishers were coming up within Indian Society. Former thought of it as ultimate insult to their religion and faith.

Provocative policies adopted by Britishers like on adopted by Governance General Of India, Lord Dalhousie’s Doctrine of Lapse, further fueled the already strong and unwavering discontent among Indian people against alien rule.

So it was actually a first of its type of rebellion that was on a national scale. Although, nationalism was not primary agenda as they helmed Bahadur Shah of Mughal Empire as their emperor. But it was the first significant act done by people to get rid of alien rule.
