let root 2be in P/q form
 \sqrt{2}  = p \div q
square both the sides.

2 = p {2} \div q {2}
2q ^{2}  = p ^{2}
2 is divisible by P
2 is divisible by P square
P=2a
p^{2}  = 4a ^{2}
2p ^{2}  = 4a {}^{2}
p {}^{2}  = 2a {}^{2} thus 2 is divisible by P
2 is divisible by P square

hence our assumption is wrong
so it is a irrational no.
