Aim :- To prove the dispersion of white light

Materials required:- Triangular glass prism, Torchlight

Procedure :-

1. Take the torchlight and prism in hand.

2. Align the torchlight and prism into a straight line.

3. Switch on the torchlight.

Observation :- As the light passes through the prism, the white light divides into seven colors namely, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet

Conclusion :- Therefore, white light disperses after passing through transparent objects.

Activity :-

Allow a narrow beam of white light to fall on one face of a prism . Hold a white screen on the other side so that light emerging out of the other face falls on it .

-------------------------------------

What do you observe on the screen ?

You will se that the white light has split up into different colors on the screen . You will see seven colors in the following order ::

  • Violet
  • Indigo
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Red

-------------------------------------

These colors can be remembered by a word VIBGYOR

Violet is the most deviated and red is the least deviated .

Natural Example :-

The rainbow is a very common example of dispersion of light in nature.

How is it formed ?

Tiny droplets of water remain suspended in the atmosphere after it has ceased to rain . When the sun appears , the light gets dispersed through these suspended drops of water as prism . The ray undergoes dispersion and as a result rainbow is formed.
