since the value of root 5 is 2.236 (approx) , mark 2.236 on the number line

make a no. line first...
starting from 0,draw a line segment AB measuring 1 unit(1cm,1 inch etc.)...
now draw angle B=90° with a protractor or using a compass....
name the angle ray measuring 90° as BX...
now cut off BC = 2 units on BX...
join AC...
from the pythagoras theorem...AC is root5
now take a compass....put it on point A...extend it to AC such that the extension of the compass is AC...now putting the two arms of the compass at A and C (the pencil being at C), draw an arc until it cuts the no. line...
let this arc cut the number line at S...
now...
AS = root5
(this method might seem bit complicated in text, but try it out...its really easy..)
