Show how would you connect three resistors, each of resistance 6ohms, so that the combination has a resistance of (a) 9ohms (b)4ohms.

(a) Connect to resistors in parallel and then that to the third one in series.

For parallel,

1/R = 1/6+1/6 = 1/3

R = 3 ohm

And now that in series with the third one,

R2 = 6 + R = 6+3 = 9 ohm

(b) Connect two in series and then that altogether in parallel to the third resistor.

R (for series) = 6+6=12 ohm

1/R2 (for total in parallel with 3rd) = 1/R +1/6 = 1/12 + 1/6 = 1/4

R2 = 4 ohm
