suspend a bar magnet in a rope
after sometime the magnet will stop parallel to the north-south
the side pointing towards north is north pole
the side pointing towards south is south pole
the magnetic lines of force emerge from north pole and merge at south pole
magnetic field is formed around the magnet due to the presence of poles
the like poles repel and unlike poles attract
