If considering the living beings in an ecosystem, the food chain of eating and being eaten constitutes energy flow and hence it is linear. Because vomiting out what has been eaten will not return the energy to the previous level of food chain.

But in the larger context, according to the law of energy conservation, energy is neither created nor destroyed. Hence it must mean that the flow of energy is not linear but circular.
