Impulse means large force applied in short interval of time. we know, according to Newton's second law, force is equal to change in momentum per unit time . Hence, impulse received during an impact is equal to total change in momentum produced during the impact.

impulse is basically the product of force and time

j=Ft

F=ma

a=(v-u)/t

j=m(v-u)/t×t

j=m(v-u)

=mv-mu

Therefore impulse is equal to change in momentum
