so, m = - 6

Consider p(- 6) =

 {( - 6)}^{2}  - ( - 6) - 42 \\  = 36 + 6 - 42 \\  = 0

now, p(- 6) = 0

therefore, m + 6 is a factor of m^2 -m - 42
