Show that the energy equivalent of 1 u is 931.5 MeV.

1 u = 1.66 x 10-27 kg, 
From E = mc2, 
E (1 u) = 1.66 x 10-27 kg * (2.99793 x 108 m/s)2 
= 1.492 x 10-10 kg-m2/s2. 

From 
1 N = 1 kg-m/s2 and 1 N-m = 1 J, 

E (1 u) = 1.492 x 10-10 J. 

1 MeV = 1.602 x 10-13 J, 
so 
E (1 u) = (1.492 x 10-10 J)/(1.602 x 10-13 J/MeV) 
= 931.3 MeV
