Answer:

1 a.m.u is defined as 1/12th of the mass of an atom of 6C12 isotope. Hence a change in mass of 1a.m.u (called mass defect) releases an energy equal to 931 MeV.1 amu = 931 MeV is used as a standard conversion.

Answer:

  1. When 1 amu is converted into energy by using E = mc² (where c is speed of light)
  2. Now E = 1.66 x 10-²⁷ x (3x10⁸)² joule
  3. If we divide above result by electronic charge we get energy in electron volt.
  4. Now if we further divide it by million, the result will be 931 MeV.
  5. Thus 931 MeV is equivalent to 1 amu mass
