Assume a body is at rest and is kept at a  height of h .

Then the total mechanical energy of the body = Potential Energy of the body

= mgh

Now If the body is dropped from that height h, then

v² - u² = 2gh

As the body was initially at rest

v² = 2gh

gh = v²/2

Now lets put this in our potential energy

E = mgh

Putting gh =v²/2

E = mv²/2

Or (1/2) mv² which is equal to kinetic energy of the body with a mass m and velocity v so the mechanical energy is conserved.
