x+7-8x/3=17/6-5x/8

7+x-8x/3=17/6-5x/8

7+3x-8x/3=17/6-5x/8

7-5x/3=17/6-5x/8

7-17/6=-5x/8+5x/3

42-17/6=-15x+40x/24

25/6=25x/24

25/6×24/25=x

therefore, x=4
