(x + y)(x + y)

 = x(x + y) + y(x + y)

 =  {x}^{2}  + xy + xy +  {y}^{2}

 =  {x}^{2}  + 2xy +  {y}^{2}

Therefore,

(x + y)(x + y) =  {x}^{2}  + 2xy +  {y}^{2}
