Given : Two numbers differ by 3

To Find : Show the condition using variable x and y

Solution:

Two numbers differ by 3

case 1 if x > y

=> x - y = 3

Case 2 if y > x

=> y - x = 3

=> -(x - y) = 3

=>  x - y = - 3

from both

x - y = ±3

=> | x - y |  = 3

Hence

x - y = ±3   or  | x - y |  = 3
