The main dispute between the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu is sharing of waters of the Cauvery River. It has been a major source of conflict.

The basics of this conflict is in two agreements made during the years 1892 and 1924 between Madras Presidency and Kingdom of Mysore. The 802 kilometres of Cauvery river has a 44,000 km2 basin area in the state of Tamil Nadu and 32,000 km2 basin area in the state of Karnataka.

The inflow is 425 TMC ft from Karnataka and 252 TMCft from Tamil Nadu.

On the basis of this inflow, the Karnataka Government is demanding proper share of the river water. They state that pre-independence agreements are invalid and are heavily in favour of the governement of Tamil Nadu. The Karnataka governement wants renegotiation on this settlement.
