Cut the small slit in between the sharp edges of blades and place at a suitable distance from a wall or screen of a dark room. Throw a beam of light on the slit by the laser pencil. A diffraction pattern of alternate bright and dark bands is seen on the wall.

Show the diffraction pattern of light with the help of a thin slit:

  • The bending phenomenon of light or diffraction allows light from a coherent source to interfere with itself and generate a characteristic pattern on the screen termed the diffraction pattern in the single-slit diffraction experiment.
  • When the sources are tiny enough to be comparable to the wavelength of light, diffraction occurs.
  • The spreading out of huge apertures is tiny and almost undetectable.
