Convex mirror:

Curved mirrors with reflective surfaces that project in the direction of the light source are called convex mirrors. Instead of acting as a light focus, this projecting surface reflects light outward.

Image Formation by Convex mirror

Based on  the location of the object in a convex mirror, there are two options.

  • When the object is at infinity - a point sized image is formed at principal focus
  • When object is between infinity and pole - a diminished, virtual and erect image is formed

An object is placed at 6cm away from the pole of a convex mirror.

The formation of the image using ray diagram is shown below.

  • From the below diagram the position of the object is between infinity and the pole P of the mirror.
  • Behind the mirror, the picture is situated between P and F.
  • The image is virtual and erect in nature.
  • The size of the image is diminished.
