The France National Anthem is known as the Marseillaise. Its written by Claude Joseph Rouget De Lisle, then an Officer in the French Army, based in Strasbourg. The song was originally called 'Chant de guerre pour I'Armee du Rhin. Its a pretty brutal song, urging the French to fight against the Prussian invasion that followed the revolution and was subsequently banned under Napoleon and for much of the 19th century, only being permanently adopting after 1879.
