Mechanical advantage of a lever is the ratio of the load exerted on the lever and the effort put by the person to overcome some load or resistance.

Mechanical advantage is the ratio of load and effort = F1/ F2

where F1 is the force exerted by load and F2 is the effort.

It is also the ratio of load arm and effort arm i.e. the distance of load and effort points from fulcrum= d1/ d2

where d1 is the load arm and d2 is the effort arm.

Since, torque is the cross product of force and arm length.

Since the torque in clockwise direction= torque of anticlockwise direction

F1 d1 = F2 d2

F1/ F2 = d2/ d1
