The United Arab Emirates is among the top water-scarce countries in the world. However the country has one of the world’s highest per capita water consumption of 550 liters per day. The country is experiencing a rapid increase in population which has in turn resulted in huge demand for water. In 2009, the total water demand in UAE was estimated at 4.5 billion m3 (BCM) which was met by groundwater (72%), desalinated water (21%) and retreated water (7%).

Water consumption in UAE is primarily divided among three sectors:

In 2009 The country was undergoing a speedy increment in people which has, in turn, appeared in tremendous demand for water. In the total water requirement in UAE was calculated at 4.5 billion m3 (BCM) which were attended by groundwater (72%), desalinated water (21%) and resigned water (7%).

However, farmers in Abu Dhabi are collaborating with the government on designing new plans to cut farming water use in half by 2014 to preserve water and guarantee sustainability. According to the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, Experts also estimated that more than 70 percent of water which is used is going into irrigation for agriculture.

EAD said there were more than 1,300 groundwater stations were made and monitored in the emirate and this project will facilitate to include all wells for salinity, water levels, and contamination. Moreover, Solar-powered desalination plants are used which will generate fresh water from saline groundwater, which can expand stocks for crops. Also, a water duty was launched two years ago  which can encourage more careful desalinated use of water.
