1-An activity to show that a current carrying wire experiences a force when placed in a magnetic field.

A small aluminum rod AB is suspended horizontally by using connecting wires as shown in the figure. A horse shoe magnet is placed vertically such that the magnetic field is directly upwards. When the key is inserted, the rod is deflected towards the left. The displacement is reversed when the direction of current in the rod is reversed. This shows that there is a force exerted on the current carrying conductor when it is placed in a magnetic field

2-Fleming’s left hand rule can be applied to find the direction of the force on a conductor carrying a current in a magneticfield.

"The left hand is held such that the thumb, index finger and middle finger are mutuallyat right angles to each other. The index finger represents the direction of the magnetic field. (North to South). The middle finger represents the direction of the current."

"The left hand is held such that the thumb, index finger and middle finger are mutuallyat right angles to each other.

The index finger represents the direction of the magnetic field. (North to South). The middle finger represents the direction of the current."

3-Examples-Generators and motors

4-The direction of the force depends on two factors:

The direction of the current

The direction of the magnetic field
