labourer in the stone quarries at Tubhe in Navi Mumbai. He had a son,
shekhar who was blind from birth. His father had never let him out of the house for he was

One day when shekhar was twelve. Five boys from the local municipal school came to
Shekhar's house. They were doing a survey of children who did not go to school. They were
shocked to know that Shekhar had never stepped out of his house since his birth. The boys
were members of an 'Aarambh' project that tries to get children to be educated. They told
Shrimant that he should send his boy to school. He did not like the idea. He was a poor familiy.
They could not afford school fees. Also he was afraid to send his son into the outside world.
The boys visited Shekhar for three months. Every day they asked the father to send his
son to school. They told him the school admission was free. Friendly Shrimant agreed. For one
year Shekhar was given special coaching at a night school run by 'Aarambh'. Then he went for
an admission test to St. Mary's High School. The teachers decided to admit him to Standard
