Solution :

Rank from top = 9

Rank from bottom = 38

∴ Total Students in the class = [Rank from top + Rank from bottom] - 1

                                              = [ 9 + 38 ] - 1

                                              = 47 - 1

                                              = 46

So, there are 46 students in Sam's class.
